Through mutual friends and Cherokee High School, Shannon met her soon-to-be fiancĂ©, Matt. “The first night we met, Matt had on Cherokee High School attire.” This sparked their initial conversation because this was the high school Shannon previously graduated from and ironically, the high school where Matt landed his first teaching job.
Matt’s original plan to propose to Shannon was during their 2012 summer beach vacation. However, Shannon says she “very quickly ruined that plan by being nosey, asking too many questions and ultimately figuring it out.” Shannon didn’t think he would be able to pull off a surprise engagement – but he did! Matt popped the question Friday, April 6th at his house. She arrived to find rose petals from the back door to the bedroom, leading to Matt on a bended knee.
The wedding planning process was off to a great start with their wedding date set for October 12th, a fall date that would offer them cooler temperatures. But when their original wedding venue unfortunately burned down, Shannon believed God had an even more perfect date picked out as they said their I do’s at The Wheeler House on the 11th.
“It was a God thing,” said Shannon. “When we booked our original venue, the barn was not yet built at The Wheeler House, so we knew it wasn’t quite the perfect fit for us as we would be having a rather large wedding. Then, after our first venue burned to the ground just a few short months before our wedding, every single thing fell perfectly into place and we knew we were destined to get married at The Wheeler House.”
Fate was surely at play for Shannon and Matt, in more ways than one. We were honored to have been a part of their wedding day, which can best be described as full of vintage romance, lots of love and family and friends.
As the couple now celebrates 6 months of marriage, we would love to again say congratulations to the beautiful Mr. and Mrs. Matt Debes.
